Universality in two dimensions

Turing, in his immortal 1936 paper, observed that “[human] computing is normally done by writing . . . symbols on [two-dimensional] paper”, but noted that use of a second dimension “is always avoidable” and that “the two-dimensional character of paper is no essential of computation”. We propose to exploit the naturalness of two-dimensional representations of data by promoting two-dimensional mo...

Universality for Bond Percolation in Two Dimensions

All (in)homogeneous bond percolation models on the square, triangular, and hexagonal lattices belong to the same universality class, in the sense that they have identical critical exponents at the critical point (assuming the exponents exist). This is proved using the star–triangle transformation and the box-crossing property. The exponents in question are the one-arm exponent ρ, the 2j-alterna...

String universality in ten dimensions.

We show that the N=1 supergravity theories in ten dimensions with gauge groups U(1){496} and E{8}×U(1){248} are not consistent quantum theories. Cancellation of anomalies cannot be made compatible with supersymmetry and Abelian gauge invariance. Thus, in ten dimensions all supersymmetric theories of gravity without known inconsistencies are realized in string theory.

String Universality in Six Dimensions

In six dimensions, cancellation of gauge, gravitational, and mixed anomalies strongly constrains the set of quantum field theories which can be coupled consistently to gravity. We show that for some classes of six-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to gravity, the anomaly cancellation conditions are equivalent to tadpole cancellation and other constraints on the matter content of...
